Scholarships
Cruise through your history degree with less financial need.
The Department of History offers two unique and competitive scholarships that will help you pay for school. Scholarships are FREE money that you do not need to pay back. Read about the requirements and then stop by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to learn more about the application process.
Available Scholarships
Columbine Scholarship
- History Major
- Minimum GPA of 3.25
- Be a Junior
- Be Taking at minimum of 12 credit hours
- Have demonstrated leadership, community service or academic excellence
History Department Endowed Scholarship
- History major
- Minimum GPA of 3.4
- 18 credit hours completed in history (12 at MSU Denver)
- Have completed 25 semester hours at MSU Denver
- Have a minimum 6 credit hour enrollment
Student Clubs
History Club
The MSU Denver Department of History sponsors the History Club. This award winning organization is open to any and all Metro Students who are interested in the subject of history.
In the past, the History Club has sponsored the “People’s History Roundtable” to investigate the historic roots of current events and worldwide flash points of crisis. We have held large events such as the commemoration of the Ludlow Massacre or the role of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. We often sponsor speakers, a film series or historic walking tours, seminars on career paths for History majors and preparation for graduate school.

Phi Alpha Theta
The Department of History Phi Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (the second oldest honorary society in the United States) was founded in 1975. In 1990-1991 Phi Psi was selected one of the top chapters in the United States.
Members plan and participate in scholarly and social events. Membership is open to all qualified MSU Denver students who have completed at least 12 hours in History and who have a 3.00 GPA or higher in History and an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher. A History major or minor is not required for membership.
Membership applications are available in the main History office (CN 211). For additional information, contact the faculty moderators: Dr. Patricia Richard or Dr. Meg Frisbee.
Study Abroad
The Department of History offers two rotational study abroad courses to Germany and Poland and Cyprus. If interested in learning more about studying abroad, please contact the Office of International Studies advisors. They will ensure you find the best program type that suits your individual situation.
HIS 390: History of Cyprus
Get archaeological field experience and gain a broad historical understanding of Cyprus’ role in a variety of historical periods.

Sometimes research can be hard and you may not know where to start. Try these sources first:
- Auraria Library
- Internet Sourcebooks (Primary Sources)
- JSTOR (Full Text of Journal Articles)
Keep in mind, the items listed above are merely a fraction of the historical resources available. Students doing historical research should familiarize themselves with the scholarly riches available through the Auraria Library, the Denver Public Library, the Colorado Historical Society, and the Library of Congress.
For example, the Denver Public Library Western History Collection includes thousands of photographs on-line.
The Colorado Digitization Project allows scholars to search tens of thousands of pages of Colorado newspapers.
The Auraria Library subscribes to many databases such as JSTOR.
Pro tip: If you find a resource on Google, and want to access information, but it costs a fee, that fee may be waived if you access through the Auraria Library.
